The third series of the Australian crime drama Underbelly, will begin shooting this week in Sydney.
After the success of the first two seasons, Channel Nine will be hoping Underbelly: The Golden Mile will continue to be a ratings booster for the network.
The newest instalment will venture into the Sydney gangland community and follow on from the foundation laid out in Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities.
Beginning in 1989, the series will be centred in King’s Cross and feature the excesses of the underground empire, the collapse of the empire, the chaos that followed, and the ultimate victory of strong and honest police, seen through the eyes of some of the most sexy, charming, corrupt and deadly people of the time.
As usual, there will be the fair share of gunmen, crooked cops, strippers, dealers, gamblers, bouncers, hitmen and of course murders.
Some of the main characters will include teenage Kings Cross identity Johnny Ibrahim, policewoman and former prostitute Kim Hollingsworth, Chook Fowler, the Bayeh Brothers, and Trevor Haken.
After surviving A Tale of Two Cities, George Freeman will continue in the new series with Peter O’Brien resuming his role as the underworld figure.
Emma Booth will play the role of Hollingsworth with John Ibrahim to be played by newcomer Firass Dirani.
And the series will have its own special cameo appearance, with Diarmid Heidenreich, better known as Pizza Hut’s delivery boy “Douggie”, also landing a role.
Underbelly: The Golden Mile is expected to air on Channel Nine in 2010.
