SBS is set to brace itself for another loss in 2010 when Top Gear makes its debut on the Nine Network.
After announcing in October last year that the motor car series will be moving over to the commercial television station, Channel Nine will be expecting big things from the popular show.
Already up to it’s 13th season, the British show has proved to be a big hit with Australian audiences, regularly being the highest rating program for SBS when it is aired.
It was a case of second time lucky for Nine, after they were beaten by SBS several years ago when they both made a bid for the series.
Nine will now have the rights to all 13 seasons, except for the first.
There has been no confirmation on what the move will mean to the show and whether the format will change at all for the network.
It is believed that it will remain largely the same, but may include a few extra celebrity guest appearances, with cricket legend Shane Warne already tipped to be hired as a guest host.
While channel Nine are all smiles, it is gloomy stuff for SBS who continue to fight with the balance that is insufficient Government subsidy mixed with commercial sponsorships.
It is not the first time this has happened with such a successful show and will remain to be the case where richer networks buy out those that brought the show to life.
