Top Gear

Top Gear, the TV series about motorcars remains the most watched Australian program on broadcasting station SBS. The Australian version of the BBC series, Top Gear Australia screened the show for eight weeks, attracting impressive audience ratings week after week.

In the five mainland capital cities, Top Gear Australia averaged 573,000 viewers a week, all tuning in to catch up on their latest car gossip. The statistics for SBS ratings also showed that around 2.5 million Australians sampled the popular car program over the eight-week second season.

The impressive ratings for Top Gear is duplicated across the globe, the BBC show gaining widespread attention. The next season to be screened in Australia, will be the Australian third season but in the UK Top Gear is up to season 13. Currently, you can purchase Top Gear (the UK version) up to season nine, but from August 6th the complete tenth season will be available on DVD.

Each season of the motoring show gives viewers a look at how cars run and the hosts humorous test-driving antics keep the show upbeat. Top Gear Australia has been SBS’s most popular program for the second year running, and SBS’s Director of Television and Online Content, Matt Campbell believes it is the energetic hosts and their automotive enthusiasm that makes the show a success.

Top Gear is an Emmy Award series and started in the UK back in 1977 but since its re-launch in 2002 it gained more of a humorous and quirky style. The popular show is produced in the UK, Australia, Russia and the latest country to produce their own version is the US. Each respective country has its own hosts and methods of presentation, but the Top Gear format is the same.

The show has received credit for its presentation and visual style for all things automotive, but it has also received its fair share of criticism. Top Gear fans like the way the show focuses on significant automobiles, and is a show for car lovers alike. Negative feedback regarding Top Gear comes from environmental groups on how the team, during their car presentation, have caused damage to environmentally sensitive areas.

But the quirky car program continues to gain a huge following and there will no doubt be more episodes made. The Australian version of Top Gear just finished up on SBS, but there will more than likely be a third installment to come. If you cant wait that long, you can always buy the Top Gear UK series, the latest season 10 on August 8th.
