Well, it’s had its first week, but has the 7 pm project lived up to its expectation? Or has it failed?

Channel Ten’s new nightly talk show comedy comprises of Dave Hughes, Carrie Bickmore, Ruby Rose, James Matheson and Charlie Pickering in a half news-style talk show where issues in the media are attacked through humour.

While the principal sounds good, the execution of it can be cringe worthy at times. With a news reading background, Carrie Bickmore presents current affair stories to the group and allows them to take over the discussion.

In a sense, the show is a bit like watching tone-deaf people enter Australian Idol. It’s funny to watch, but the end result can be tragic. For the 7 pm project, as much as it has moments of greatness, its inconsistencies really do let it down.

This has been reflected in the ratings. What started out with a ratings high of 1.3 million viewers, has since crumbled three nights in a row with a mere 800,000 people tuning in on Thursday night.

In its defence, the show has had pretty big shoes to fill in, taking over from Master Chef, and it is still in its first week. However, Australian audiences are a ruthless and unforgiving, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the 7pm Projects fails to see through the rest of the season.
