Survivors is the newest zombie television series to grace our TV sets in 2008.

Since the reinvention of the genre, largely thanks to films like 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead and Land of the Dead, production companies have jumped on the wagon and created numerous short series based on the basic zombie principal.

For some reason, it is British who seem to love it the most, which is no surprise Survivors is straight out of the UK.

What makes the new series standout from the rest is that it is based on timely and current issues on today’s world.

In the past, zombie movies have been set in a world where zombies infect others in an unexplainable way, with no real idea about what causes it, or how it can be stopped.

In Survivor, it mirrors the recent Swine Flu saga by introducing the European Flu, which infects 90 per cent of Britain, leaving only a handful of survivors.

These survivors are made up of: a mother, a prisoner, a Muslim child, a wealthy young man, a doctor and some other stray roles along the way.

Set in Manchester, you are eventually able to forgive the annoying accent and begin to enjoy the captivating and drama filled plot.

The six part series has already aired overseas, where many countries are beginning to play season two.

Hopefully the first series rates well enough down under that we can see the follow up series.

In Australia, Survivor premieres at 9:30pm on Sunday March 21 on channel Nine.
