The Contender Australia might have already crowned its new victor, but it does not meant the first series of the American franchise is done and dusted.
In case you all forgot, winner of the series Garth Wood, is now expected to tackle Anthony ‘the man’ Mundine in a world title fight that was part of the winners prize.
Originally the clash was scheduled for early April, but with both boxers currently recovering from fighting injuries, it has been announced that the two will meet a later date during the year.
Garth Woods, who has only eight fights to his name and was a last minute replacement in the series, fought well above all expectations and surprised many on his road to victory.
In the final he took on top-ten ranked boxer in the middleweight division, Kariz Kariuki, and defeated him convincingly on points.
But while Woods has impressed many in the boxing community with his grunt and ambitious fighting style, many still believe he is way too inexperienced for the likes of Mundine.
One of these critics is current Australian Welterweight boxer Lovemore Ndou, who slammed the three-time world champion in a press conference last week.
“At the end of the day he (Mundine) doesn’t get the respect that he deserves,” Ndou said.
“Win or lose, as long as you are fighting good fighters, you will still maintain your respect.
“If you beat up nobodies and make noise like he’s making and claiming he’s got no challengers, that’s ridiculous, you know what is ridiculous? Mundine is supposed to be a three-time world champion and now he’s supposed to fight Garth Wood, an eight-fight novice. Does it make him look any good?”
