Making it’s debut in 1985, Neighbours was a show that no one really expected would be as popular more than 20 years on. The Aussie soap follows the lives of several families who live in Ramsay street, in the fictional suburb of Erinsborough.
Channel seven decided to cancel the series at the end of 1985 because of low ratings, but network ten caught on to this Aussie drama and began airing it in 1996. Neighbours started off slow, but with new, younger characters and publicity to boost, the show started to climb.
Neighbours has focused on the lives of those living in the street- the main families being the Ramsays, Robinsons and Clarks. But over the years the characters have moved in and out, providing old characters to move on and new ones to make their beginning.
Over the past 20 years, Neighbours has had its fair share of births, deaths, marriages, alongside murders, affairs, sudden disappearances (and reappearances), plane crashes and fires.
Charcters have come and gone, but most recognisable faces Lou Carpenter (Tom Oliver) and Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) have remained Neighbours icons. Nighbours has been inducted into the Logies Hall of fame and is now officially the longest running Australian drama.
Nighbours airs weekdays on network ten at 6.30pm.
