Dance Your Ass Off Dumped

Channel Nine has axed its brand new reality weight loss series, Dance Your Ass Off, after just one episode due to poor ratings.

The network had a huge promotional push for the US series that was seen to be a mix between The Biggest Loser and Dancing With the Stars. In the show, contestants had to dance together, then receive a score by the judges, before hopping on a set of scales.

However, even with a prime time slot of 7:30, the series premiere on Tuesday night could not even attract 800,000 viewers, far from the pass/fail benchmark of one million, and was subsequently dumped from the schedule.

For prime-time national TV shows in Australia, one million viewers is seen as the pass/fail benchmark, however for first episodes that figure is even higher.

In comparison, similar reality series The Biggest Loser averaged 1.2 million viewers, while Master Chef regularly had 1.4. million tuning in.

The axing is a huge blow to the network, which was hoping to use the series to rival Channel Ten’s successful talk show, Talking Bout Your Generation.

More repeats of Two and a Half Men will replace the time slot, but it has not signaled the end for Dance Your Ass Off, with Channel Nine deciding to hold onto the show for further down the track.

The network said the program would still screen on its new digital channel, Go! - to be launched in August - later this year.
