Australian Idol capped off a forgettable year in a positive style, drawing in its highest ratings total all year with 1.47 million tuning in for the Sydney Opera House Finale.
While the figure was pleasing, it was still an indication the show was still on the decline, being well down on last year, and still losing the top spot for the night.
In 2008, 1.6 million viewers were set on Channel Ten as Wes Carr took out the series, but a year later and the numbers are down enough to see Channel Seven’s, The Force, take the honours of the highest rating Sunday show.
But, even if the trends are going the wrong way, network chief programming officer, David Mott, said he is still pleased with the numbers.
“These results just go to show, Australians love Idol,” he said.
“After seven years the show continues to wow audiences with its fresh talent and skilled performers.”
While the year’s series was tarnished with scandals, presenter turnovers, the welcoming of new talent, and numerous formatting issues, there is enough evidence to suggest the show need a revamp in 2010, much in the similar line to the now defunct Big Brother.
Regardless of what the ratings mean for Australian Idol, It was all smiles for 19-year-old Stan Walker, who took out the finale and was named the nations newest Idol winner.
The male soul singer pipped Hayley Warner for the coveted title.
