The empty seat vacated by the dumped Kyle Sandilands in the Australian Idol judging panel has been filled by SONY Music talent scout Jay Dee Springbett.
Producers’ of the Channel Ten reality singing series yesterday announced UK-born Mr Springbett would take up the judging role from Monday’s live semi-finals, joining Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson and Marcia Hines on the panel.
Idol last month sacked Sandilands after a radio stunt involving a 14 year-old girl and a lie detector ended up in rape allegations and much media criticism.
Springbett has worked in the industry for 15 years and said that while he was exited by the opportunity, he still had nerves about his debut on the small screen.
“Once I get over my immense nerves I think you’ll start seeing how I am,” Springbett said.
”What I do for a day job is pretty much assess talent and the one thing I’ve learnt over the years is that you’ve just got to be honest with people.
”The industry is harsh, and sometimes you need to be harsh but all I can do is try and give them the advantages of my experience.”
The controversial sacking of Sandilands, coupled with the shows falling ratings, prompted the producers to find a replacement who will portray the shows new family friendly image.
Springbett appears to be that man.
”I’ve never put myself as a post modern role model. But I definitely do have a family, I’m a committed family man, my babies are the best thing I’ve ever done,” Springbett said.
