Channel Nine’s coverage of the Winter Olympic Games continues to spiral downwards in 2010,
This time it is hosts Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy who are coming under tough scrutiny with activist groups around the nation calling for their heads after their controversial comments aimed at US figure skater Johnny Weir.
Weir, who has been know for his camp persona while skating, was on the receiving end of some far from perfect commentary by the two hosts while performing on the ice.
While discussing the performance, Molloy said: “They don’t leave anything in the locker room, these blokes, do they?”
To which McGuire replied: “They don’t leave anything in the closet either, do they?”
But the comments didn’t stop there.
The much loved Channel Nine personality then described one competitor’s costume as “a bit of a brokeback”.
“A bit of Brokeback Mountain exercises – you can’t wear that,” Molloy then replied.
The comments have now found the pair in hot water with Gay Rights activist, Gary Burns, calling for the network to sack both hosts.
Burns said the comments made by the pair were offensive and detrimental to many gay communities.
“They’re harmful to, particularly, gay youth who are living in isolated areas across the nation,” he said.
“These young kids look up to (McGuire) and when they hear these kinds of comments and having issues with their own coming-out process, or low self-esteem or depression… they feel worthless.
“It has caused a lot of angst and discussion within the gay and lesbian community because people can’t understand why these comments would be allowed to happen on national television.”
McGuire and Molloy will continue to commentate until the remainder of the Olympic coverage.
