Controversial media figure Kyle Sandilands has been given a lifeline in the TV industry, after being poached by Channel Seven to join the judging panel of their reality series, Australia’s Got Talent.
After disgracing himself on national radio six months ago, when a 16 year-old girl revealed she had been raped on his breakfast show, he was immediately sacked by Channel Ten in his role as an Australian Idol judge.
The move by Seven signals a massive shift in attitudes by the Australian media, who have been so set on criticizing the 38 year-old since the event.
Sandilands himself was surprised by the decision, and has thanked the network for “having the balls” to sign him.
“I am really excited. I want to thank Channel 7 for having the balls to put me on there,” he said.
“I am broadening my horizons on there and the opportunity came knocking and it was too good to pass up. The thing is, everyone loves a good singer and everyone loves a good dancer, the great thing is it’s up to what talent walks up throughout the series.
“We’ve seen some strange things on Idol and I am sure it’s going to get stranger.”
And in regards to the controversial radio segment of 2009?
“I think last year the controversy wasn’t on the television it was on the radio and we’ve been doing the same sort of thing on the radio for 10 years,” Sandilands said.
“The thing I learned last year was my humour might not work with everyone’s humour. I always about a little bit of fun and sometimes in the past I might have stepped over the mark and some might say I have jumped over the mark on occasion.”
