Channel Nines gamble with bringing Survivor back to prime time seems to have been a success, without setting the TV world on fire.
After neglecting the reality TV series for the past few years, screening it at unheralded time slots, and on their digital channel GO! rather than their mainstream station, it is finally back to familiar territory, in a 7:30pm prime time slot.
On Tuesday night the Nine network were rewarded with their gamble, taking out the number three spot during the hour.
The 7:30 report took the cake, with 1.17 million viewers tuning in.
Next in line was Ten’s Accidentally on Purpose, which drew in 890,000.
Seven’s Gary Unmarried was a disappointment, pulling in only 623,000 viewers across the nation.
While Survivor: Samoa’s ratings of 788,000 did not set the world alight, it was a steady return to the buffer time slot, and a positive response from realty TV fans.
Reviews have already been raving about the series so far in the US, where they are currently half way through the 20th season.
With the show expected to only get better from here, network officials can expect the number of viewers to rise over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, next week will see a double episode of the show on Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30pm.
The Nine Network will drop the movie Mr & Mrs. Smith and replace it with My Big Fat Greek Wedding at 9:30pm,
Die-hard reality fans could end up watching two hours of Survivor and then switch over to The Amazing Race on Seven afterwards.
What a night!!
