Farewell to Don Lane

Tributes are flowing for one of greatest entertainers, with the passing away of the legendary Don Lane.

Aged 75, Lane finally lost his battle with his dementia-affected illness with his family by his side.

After making a name for himself in the United States as a nightclub singer, the American Born Lane migrated to Australia, where he rose to fame as the host of several TV variety programs for the Nine Network.

One of his most famous shows, The Don Lane Show, saw him forge a strong relationship with another television great, Bert Newton.

Newton spoke highly of the man who stole Australia’s hearts, and how close the two were.

“Over the years, I’ve tried to think of one occasion when Don and I had a difference of opinion and angry words, and I can’t think of one,” he said.

“The Don really gave me a kick along in a time in my career when I really needed it. I was still under contract to Nine, I wasn’t doing very much and in many respects he wore his heart on his sleeve. He cried quite easily but they were genuine tears. A very emotional man, a very good man, a very loveable man.”

Lane leaves us, boasting an illustrious career, which saw him win 15 Logie awards, and an induction into the awards Hall of Fame.

A list of Australia’s who’s who, have spoken out about their respect for the entertainment great, including Nine’s CEO David Gyngell, Federal Arts Minister Peter Garrett, TV presenter Kerri-Anne Kennerley and politician Steve Ciobo.
