Bogan Pride

The problem with Australian comedy series is that they just have too much competition from overseas productions to compete with them.

Luckily for us we have channels like the SBS and the ABC, which ensure that local productions are still carrying on.

Bogan Pride is one of these local productions, shot in 2008 and screening throughout 2008 and 2009.

Unlike many international series, Bogan Pride did not come with a massive budget and A-class actors, but it did just enough to make it interesting.

Produced and written by Rebel Wilson the series was directed by Peter Templeman and is centered on the life of a teenage bogan girl called Jennie (Wilson).

The series has back up performances by Lulu McClatchy and Ryan Jones who both do a wonderful job and show us that you do not need to be a big name to be a good actor.

Both were shining lights in what has been regarded as a mediocre series.

For those who have never heard of Bogan Pride, the basic plot is based around Jennie Cragglives who lives in Boonelg with her extremely overweight mother Berenice.

Her Aunty Cassandra’s gay husband has left her.

Nick (Jones) is the extremely good-looking neighbour who has caught the eye of Cragglives.

In an attempt to get some money and pay for her mum’s stomach stapling operation she enters a dance competition, and attempts to impress the boy she has a crush on and get revenge on the school skanks at the same time.

Bogan Pride can be bought on DVD for around $35 at most local DVD stores.
